Both authentic and created materials are important to use in the classroom. Authentic materials are great because they are interesting and motivating to students. Students also feel a sense of accomplishment after using them. The drawback is that they are not graded to level and can rarely be used for beginner students. Created materials are great because they can be specific to the students level, but the drawback is that they aren't usually as interesting to students as authentic material. When choosing a course book, teachers have to factor in things like the price, the methodology and the additional materials, among other things. Great teachers will use a course book but substitute or add to it depending on the specific needs and interests of the students.
