Unit 13 covers the basics of Phonology. This was my first exposure to this method of understanding speech and pronunciation which helped broaden my understanding of the English language. I already had an understanding of stress, articulation and rhythm but intonation was a new concept I had not considered yet before reading this unit. At first the idea of teaching these concepts seemed unnecessary if teaching to non-native speakers however after reading this unit there is a lot to be gained for students if they can grasp key concepts of speech. Since the pitch, volume, and stress can all impact the meaning and interpretation of a sentence this knowledge will help students put into perspective the language they are learning and elevate it past just reciting memorized phrases.
