I think it was useful to read about the effectiveness of course text books and to identify the advantages and disadvantages of using them. From my own experience, I can relate to how following a course book too closely can become boring, but they also provide a helpful structure in class. I taught English in Honduras as a volunteer a few months ago, and we did not have a textbook to use for the first few weeks. It was difficult to create unison between the lower level and upper level classes. Eventually they gave us a book to use as a guide so the students could build on their knowledge from beginner, to intermediate, to advanced classes. We would use popular English songs as authentic materials to practice listening and to learn vocab which was a nice way to break away from the book, but the structure from having a book was very helpful.
