The study of phonology is full of a variety of parts including the classifications and physical properties of sound. It gives perspective on the way we speak, and harbors self-reflection. Most of the section was comprised of me sounding words out very slowly in public settings, trying to pick apart the intricacies of speech. There are many components, including the physical body--tongue, larynx, glottal, alveolar ridge, hard palette and soft palette--, how placement of tongue and lips changes articulations, and in what manner those articulations are carried out--plosive, lateral, nasal, fricative, approximate, and affricate. The process of learning correct pronunciation is arduous, and must be included in every lesson--a challenge that can be overlooked. Why so important? Because how we say things, how we emphasize certain words in different instances, is what expresses our feelings--something that defines humans as a species. All in all, this was a very enlightening and entertaining chapter. Challenging in some ways, but potentially fun class activities.
