Testing a student's knowledge and understanding of English can help me as a teacher to decide what I need to teach and where to start. Placement tests and diagnostic test are similar, but placement tests are used to put students together in groups of the same level whereas diagnostic tests tell the teacher what the student knows already and what they need to learn. Progress testing is any means of measuring how much the students have retained so far in class and how much needs to be reviewed and they can be a source of motivation for students to review on their own. Practice tests are used to help students practice for an external ecam and should therefore reflect the exam the students are going to take. Students can also take external exams for certificates for learners of English and assessments for work or education related opportunities.
