In this unit I learned about considerations and methods for teaching vocabulary, grammar, and language functions. Teaching vocabulary may have varying degrees of difficulty depending on its similarity to the students' first language, its pronunciation and spelling, and similarity to their preexisting vocabulary knowledge, among others. Selecting vocabulary to teach must also take consideration, including its appropriateness and relevance, frequency of the words (i.e. real life utility), and teachability. When teaching vocabulary, students need to know the words' meaning, usage (including how it interacts with other words), word grammar, spelling, and pronunciation. When learning new grammatical structures, it is important to teach the structure's meaning, its usage, the form and pattern, and how its usage might vary between written and spoken forms. Finally, the lesson covers language functions. I think this is one of the most interesting and important parts of teaching new grammar and vocabulary, because it contextualizes what you learn in the broader culture and connotation of the language. For example, it's important to know that a word like "indubitably" is formal, old-fashioned, and literary in sound (or may come off as comical in this age) versus using the common "of course." The unit gives suggestions on how to teach using using the ESA lesson structure, including a patchwork lesson plan for grammar and a boomerang lesson plan for language functions.
