An important thing I learned from this unit is that authentic texts don't work so well for beginner-learners. So often, I want to engage lower-level English speakers with real songs and movies and culture, but I need to remember this can lead to feeling blocked and not confident. I will aim to do a better job choosing texts or creating non-authentic texts that match their level, so that they are able to feel confident and a little challenged. I really appreciated this section's ideas for problem solving in reading/listening, such as pre-teaching vocabulary and careful selection of text. I also liked how they broke down helpful skills: predictive, skimming, scanning, detailed and deduction. I will try to incorporate more honing in on these skills in lessons. I also need to improve my reading/listening lessons by using more interesting stuff. Lots of book material is boring for students, and choosing more interesting material plus building their interest beforehand, can liven up the class a lot.
