In Unit 5, we are provided with excellent information and training for managing our classrooms effectively. It is crucial that we establish a positive, friendly but firm rapport with all of our students. This starts with learning their names and attending to them equally. Eye contact can be both effective in eliciting participation, as well as intimidating, so we must learn when it is best used. There is no need to shame a student who is seeking attention negatively in class (horsing around). Usually it is enough to stop the lesson and briefly look at them until the behavior stops. Meeting with them individually can also help but may not always be appropriate on cultural or gender grounds [my addendum]. Varying our activities, from pairs to small groups maximizes STT. How we arrange seats makes a big difference as well! We can maintain an effective classroom environment without being too strict or a pushover!
