A good teacher possesses a variety of characteristics including being kind and patient, cultivating a good relationship with the students, and successfully motivating students to learn and absorb the material. Teachers often teach best not only using their voice, but hand gestures and engaging facial expressions as well. Teachers can also employ a variety of roles in the classroom, such as being a moderator, assessor, and facilitator. They can also engage in classroom activities, like group work, while teaching and do not necessarily have to focus all of their class time on lecturing. On the other hand, active students learning another language exhibit a desire to learn the material, explore the language, and ask questions when they are unsure of an answer. Adult learners may be more motivated to learn the language because they tend to have more specific reasons for attending the class. Students on the other hand may lack motivation because they might be required to learn a second language, like in schools, but they may absorb the material faster and be more patient with themselves. Students may want to learn a new language for career purposes, communicative purposes, or to travel.
