A portion of classroom time should be devoted to productive skills, talking and writing. While writing is often neglected in the typical ESL classroom to minimize quiet classroom time, it's a core skill that enhances a student's understanding of the language. Talking activities can involve working in groups, debates, discussion, role plays, and pair work. Writing activities can involve creative individual or group writing and purpose-based writing tasks. In order to promote class participation, students should be given adequate time to complete each task and the teacher should present a welcoming atmosphere to hear students' ideas, correcting only in the study phase.
