Past tenses 1.Past simple *Form: - Affirmative: Subject + Verb in past tense (regular-V_ed or irregular V) + Complement - Negative: Subject + didn’t + Verb in base form + Complement - Question: Did + Subject + Verb in base form + Complement *Usage: - For the past action when the time given. - When the time is asked about. - When the action clearly took place at the definite time even though this time is not mentioned. - Sometimes the time become definite as a result of a question and answer in the present perfect. 2.Past continuous *Form: - Affirmative: Subject + was/were + Verb + ing - Negative: Subject + was/were + not + Verb + ing - Question: Was/were + Subject + not + Verb + ing *Usage: - For interrupted past actions - Used without a time expression, it can indicate gradual development that took place in the past. - It can express an action, which began before that time and probably continued after it. - We use the continuous tense in descriptions. 3. Past perfect * Form: - Affirmative: Subject + had + past participle - Negative: Subject + had + not + past participle - Question: Had + Subject + past participle *Usage: This tense represents actions that occurred before other actions in the past. 4. Past perfect continuous * Form: - Affirmative: Subject + had + been + Verb + ing - Negative: Subject + had + not + been + Verb + ing - Question: Had + Subject + been + Verb + ing *Usage: To talk about longer actions or situations in the past that had been going on continuously up to the past moment that we are thinking about. I have learnt that I must give more examples for each tense, ask students to make sentences and use past tenses correctly. Besides, i should give more interesting activities for my students to practice.
