Speaking activities have been the primary focus of my private English classes, and the part that motivates me most. However, writing is also very important and too often neglected. I would like to incorporate more writing activities in my classes, like writing stories and instructions and anything! It would be very helpful to show students how English is not a phonetic language and that spelling doesn't take into account the pronunciation. There are some spelling patterns though, and maybe a future lesson will cover that. This unit offered useful advice in managing controlled (drilling, prompting), guided (model dialogues, guided role play) and free speaking lessons (free role play, discussions, info gap, debates, simulations, communication games). It also listed ways to encourage interaction (group work, plenty of practice, fluency activities, purposeful and dynamic activities and careful planning). It is also possible to bring speaking and writing activities together. I liked the example weather lesson provided. It was engaging and interesting. I would like to try it.
