This unit discussed how a teacher can prepare to teach a new language. The three main areas of language learning are vocabulary, grammar and functions. The foundation of language is grammar, and vocabulary and functions stem from it. Most lessons will focus on one of these areas at a time. When introducing a new language, the ESA methods easily apply. I learned there are four factors that determine how easy or hard it will be for students on any level to learn new vocabulary: 1) the similarity to the student’s own language; 2) the similarity to English words the student already knows; 3) spelling and pronunciation; and, 4) appropriacy. When teaching vocabulary, grammatical structure and language functions, students need to know what the word means, how and when to use the word, where the word belongs in a sentence, how it interacts and affects other words in a sentence, how to spell and/or write the word, and how the word is spoken or pronounced. Students will also need to know formation and patterns of the language. Many of the techniques used in ESA are the same for each area, but the methods used may differ depending on the language level being taught.
