Course books in my opinion are necessary, but not indispensable. On the one hand, they provide a syllabus and most of them are well adapted to every level regarding the grammar points and vocabulary. They provide a logic progression so the teacher doesn’t have to come up with what he/she must teach next. Imagine every teacher at a language institute creating their own syllabus. What a confusion or a waste of time on meetings. On the other hand, they are not essential since a class could go well without them. To sum up, I think the best would be to mix both course books with authentic materials and adapted ones chosen by the teacher.
