The teaching of a new language involves having the students be exposed to it, understand the meaning. This in conjunction with knowing how it is constructed and having the ability to practice and put the words in meaning. Basic grammar is good at the very least for understanding how a language works. Adding the functions and other meanings allows the student to use the language more effectively. Depending on if vocabulary or grammar is being taught, each lesson should take this into account. As with all things related to learning there isn't a one size fits all approach, however vocabulary benefits from the straight arrow approach, while grammar is learned better with a boomerang approach. The intended goal is always for the students to have time to assimilate the material and then be able to put it to use. Each situation offers up many possible teaching scenarios and using the engage and activate times are crucial for giving the students a better understanding of the language.
