In my experience and as it is held in unit 12, the productive skills are not taught with the same amount of time and dedication. Both students and teachers, including myself, tend to practice more fluency and accuracy when speaking and writing is sort of left behind. Regarding the last one, people are usually reluctant to write because of the factors stated in the unit: handwriting, punctuation, etc. But in the case of Latin American students, another reason must be added and it is that people are not accustomed to write. Arrangements are usually done orally, so encouraging students to write could be a difficult task to the teacher.
