My current workplace has a strong division of student potential between verbal and written proficiencies. Students are quite capable of both producing and receiving information when it is written; however, they struggle greatly when they are expected to use their speaking and listening skills. I think the reason is that the students are very accustomed to several factors: Working in small groups, remaining silent and listening to the teacher, and taking a lot of time to think of the correct answer instead of guessing and being wrong. The problem is that all of those things are non-conducive to speech, especially since the speech of most native English speakers is riddled with shortcuts and agrammatical structures. It's discouraging to see such slow progress, and I'm torn on whether to extend further using their capable written skills or attempt to "shore up" their lackluster verbal skills.
