The second unit of my ITTT TEFL course was titled "Parts of Speech" and focused on the eight different elements of grammar which are known as nouns, adjectives, articles, verbs, adverbs, gerunds, pronouns, and prepositions. The first part of speech discussed was nouns which name people, animals, places, things, states, and physical objects and are often the main subject of sentences. The second part of speech discussed was adjectives which are used to describe nouns like people, places, and things within the sentence structure. The third part of speech discussed in the chapter was definite articles like the and indefinite articles like a and an which are used to refer to any or a specific person or object in a group. The fourth part of speech discussed was verbs which are used to describe the actions and/or states of the noun and that state what the main subject of the sentence is doing. The fifth part of speech discussed was adverbs which help to provide important information concerning the action or the state of the verb that is being used to denote the action of the noun or nouns. The sixth part of speech that was discussed was gerunds which are the -ing form of a verb that is used as a noun and used in the same way as a noun as the sentence subject. The seventh part of speech that was discussed was pronouns which are used in place of more precise nouns and noun phrases in a sentence. The eighth and final part of speech that was discussed was conjunctions and prepositions which show the relationship that exists between the noun or a pronoun and some other word within the sentence.
