This unit has taught me how to teach new vocabulary, grammar and language functions. I have learnt that students need to know the meaning and use of vocabulary and grammar, among other aspects. For vocabulary, the words to teach vary with the students' language level. The words should be appropriate to the students and the task at hand, such as their teachability and if their usage frequency is appropriate to the students' level. Students will absorb words more easily if they are similar to words they already know and if the spelling and pronunciation are not too challenging for their level. Vocabulary and grammar lessons are more easily understood if carried out in the straight arrow ESA style, while functions are better taught in a boomerang or patchwork style. Teaching functions, such as inviting/accepting/rejecting, is best done with Activate sessions.
