This unit keys in on several important aspects of TEFL when we are preparing the materials we will use to teach. Created course materials are most useful because they have been tested in classrooms. They build on previous knowledge and keep reinforcing what the students have already learned. But they are boring and often outdated. They are canned and do not make use of authentic materials such as newspaper stories and radio broadcasts. It keeps us on our toes when we have to create materials, but we need to flow naturally from one language concept to the next. Created materials will lack the structure of a course textbook. So, we can use the book but adapt it to our specific students' needs and skill level. We can supplement it, skip lessons in it, or replace lessons therein. Puzzles and sample phone conversations are provided.
