This Unit teaches us about pronunciation. It emphasizes pronunciation because many TEFL courses don't, and as a result, folks learning English are not taught well about the importance of proper pronunciation. It is important to L2s to be able to pronounce words correctly. Emphasis, intonation, and stress all play a role in conveying meaning. Typically, statements end with a drop in intonation while questions end with a rise. There is a lot of melody to English, and it helps to be very dramatic when teaching about intonation. It can help to draw whole sentences on the board and mark them with red swoops to show intonation. Later it can help to draw parts of the mouth to show how to pronounce sounds. some are way up front with the teeth and some are way in the back with the vocal chords and throat. Nonetheless, proper pronunciation of words is taught best though demonstrating how the mouth moves and by using hand gestures. Even intoning nonsense words can show how just a sound can effect meaning.
