While often neglected, students need proper lessons in pronunciation included in their ESL learning. Teachers should take the time to review the proper intonation of sentences as the same sentence with different intonations can have diverse meanings. Likewise, teachers should go over the stress on words in a sentence which often serve to emphasize certain components of the sentence and thus can alter the point being communicated. As English is not a phonetic language, teachers should embrace drawing mouth diagrams, practicing tongue twisters, and using phonemes to help students.
