In this unit, I learned about receptive skills and how to effectively teach them. I have learned that we not only read and listen with our ears and eyes, but with our minds as well to be able to understand something better based on our pre-existing knowledge. Sentence length, word length, and a number of unfamiliar words can present problems to English learners. The following are some ways to prevent this: (1) pre-teaching vocabulary that are essential to understanding the text, and (2) careful selection of tests that are more suited to the student's abilities. In summary, the keys to having a successful receptive skills lesson are as follows: materials that interest the students, build interest before reading/listening, pre-teach complex vocabulary, vary the type of material, use the material to practice different skills, realistic comprehension materials that aid understanding, and active phase that is related to the text.
