In this unit, we got to watch two videos of two different lessons, one very ineffective, and the other very effective. In the first video, the teacher does not even introduce himself. He does not ask the students' names, either. He goes right into drilling the students and fill-in-the-gap practice without explaining what the goals or objectives are for the lesson. he does not engage them first in any meaningful way. Instead, he jumps straight to the "study" portion of the lesson. In the second video the teacher greets his students warmly, says his name, writes it on the board and they repeat it without prompting. He gives them clear instructions before each activity (boomerang style). He uses their names throughout the lesson and praises them when they do well. He uses several excellent activate activities and thanks them at the end. It is very easy to see in this unit that the second video is how we should be teaching. The students had fun and learned at the same time!
