The two basic receptive skills in any language are reading and listening, while the two productive skills are speaking and writing. To have a balanced approach in teaching, all four must be incorporated into the lessons. This lesson is focused on the receptive skills, it discussed the reasons for reading and listening, and various ways in how we do it. It also focused on the proper ways to teach in order to avoid problems that students could encounter. Techniques such as pre-teaching vocabulary, careful selection of texts, creating topics and tasks that pique the interest of students. The unit also gave a guide on the patchwork of a typical receptive skills lesson.
