This unit has taught me the pros of using a course book and the care needed when using them. Course books are expected by students, they are often tried and tested, they provide continuity and progression and frequently use previously learnt language items to reinforce knowledge, and offer a balance of skills. I have also learnt the various ways of adapting lessons from a course book by omitting irrelevant sections, replacing them with more interesting segments, supplementing parts to reinforce knowledge, and adapting them for use in a different way. Teachers should supplement course work when necessary with authentic or non-authentic material. Authentic materials help improve students' confidence in tackling 'real' English, but they have to be carefully chosen for the language level. Non-authentic materials can be easily tailored to fit the language level and interests of the students.
