This unit was very interesting in providing a couple of model lessons that include the ESL method in teaching vocabulary and grammar. The unit was focused on vocabulary, but it built off the idea that grammar is the trunk of the tree, and vocabulary is the leaves. The two complement each other; in other words, teaching vocabulary goes hand in hand with teaching grammar. I have often struggled to feel passionate about the vocabulary in school books, so I would like to come up with ways to select more relevant vocabulary. One useful tip is to choose words that are similar to the L1 vocabulary of students. In Japanese, there are many similar words. Spelling and pronunciation continue to be a very challenging aspect of learning English for Japanese speakers. Especially since teachers often let them fall back on "katagana English." I would especially like to learn to help students who have a hard time memorizing English words. I would have appreciated more example activities to engage students in teaching them vocabulary (besides traditional gap-fill, word searches, drilling and crossword activities)
