Tests are difficult issue for me due to the nature of my classes. Because I work with other teachers, it can be very difficult to attempt assessment of what we've learned in class. Since student placement is likewise out of my control, I have used diagnostic tests at the beginning of the year instead. I've also been using other kinds of informal and informal assessment, and I've found projects or more creative endeavors work very well to assess teenagers. Doing just tests is stressful for students and often saddles them with a lot of pressure to perform. Projects (presentations, posters, etc.) often enable students to work at their own pace and encourage generative usage of the language as opposed to just memorization and repetition. Those things are important, yes, but ultimately not the goal of teaching a language.
