I have learnt that the productive skills - speaking and writing - are necessary for communication. Accuracy and fluency in speaking are both important, but the emphasis differs depending on the phase; accuracy is necessary in the study phases while fluency is more critical in the activate phase. To improve accuracy, tasks should be more controlled or guided by the teacher, and include activities like pronunciation drills and model dialogue. On the other hand, flow and effective communication are expected from students in fluency based activities like debates and free role plays. Requirements for writing differ from speaking - writing has a different set of issues such as grammar, vocabular, and also handwriting, format and punctuation. Extensive reading is necessary for experience of different formats and spelling.
