This Unit focuses on troubleshooting for contingencies when teaching English as a foreign language. The one that strikes me as being the most challenging is when there are varying skill levels in the class. I can see this with classes that involve differently-aged students, as well as business English classes where there may by supervisors and entry-level employees in the same class. This is where it is most effective to pair up those who have more knowledge in English with those who have less. The ones who know more can help the others. It helps their skills and confidence improve, too! We just need to monitor this kind of work closely to ensure that the leaders do not dominate the conversations, leaving the other ones with too little talking time / practice. Another issue is with reluctant students. As a teacher, I have encountered this. It takes self-confidence, creativity, and flexibility. Switch up the lesson or ditch it entirely for a favorite game of theirs (as long as they don't get too used to getting 'rewarded' for not talking enough with games that are more fun but do not teach the basics!
