In unit thirteen I learned that pronunciation is often the most neglected aspect of teaching the English Language. The lesson argues that it is because most foreign teachers lack confidence and training to teach it properly. I think another reason is that the English Language is so widely used geographically that each regional form of English has their own form of dialect and they tend to pronounce things a bit differently in the southern United States and the Northern Parts of the United States. One example would be the pronunciation of a stream, some say creek, while others say crick, but crick is not a word that means crick the dictionary. I think the main reason learning English is so difficult is because of the point George Bernard Shaw hammers through in his poem Hints on Pronunciation for Foreigners. With so many different words that look the same but sound different it would take years to understand they all link together. Looking through all of the different ways of articulation I can understand why it would seem a daunting task to try to be able to explain to a child an alveolar sound or a palatal sound. It seems it will take the clarity and repetition in the classroom.
