In this unit, I learned about pronunciation and phonology. To start, intonation is the variation of volume and pitch. It is what carries the message and it is usually used in questioning, agreeing/disagreeing, and expressing emotions. The rise/fall intonation is what is normally used. It is used in straightforward questions, statements, and short utterances. The fall/rise pattern is used in expressing surprise and disagreements. It is used when the speaker wants the listener to respond. The flat intonation indicates that the speaker doesn't want to communicate or has nothing to say. Words are stressed to emphasize what the speaker means, but not all words can be stressed. Auxiliary verbs, articles, pronouns, and prepositions shouldn't be stressed. Pronunciation can be taught by means of articulation, through peer dictation, their own mouth, visuals, phonemes, and tongue twisters.
