Through this unit, we examined the importance of the receptive skills of reading and listening. When activating these receptive skills, whether it is for a purpose or for entertainment, we employ a set of specialized skills that can assist us in understanding the the content. These skills can include: scanning, skimming, predicting, and deducing from context. When teaching receptive skills to students it is important to ensure that the topic and the language content is relevant to them and easily understandable, this helps ensure that students maintain focus and enthusiasm in what they are reading, otherwise they will not engage with the material. Once interest is established, activities and tasks can be utilized to help reinforce comprehension and build upon a students understanding of the dialogue. It can be helpful to pre-teach certain vocabulary terms before engaging in the study phase so as to not confuse students with new vocabulary terms.
