I have learnt that there are different ways of evaluating and testing students - before courses in the form of placement tests and diagnostic tests to gauge their ability so as to place them in the appropriate class and to plan suitable lessons, during the course in the form of progress tests to find out the language items they have retained or those that need working on, and also at the end of courses in the form of achievement tests.
