This unit focuses on the teaching of the productive skills of speaking and writing. In order to do this efficiently, I now know my lesson should have a balance of accuracy activities and fluency activities. I have learnt the different between these activities and I understand they are both equally important. While accuracy activities are important in the study phase, fluency activities help to check progress in the activate phase. Thus they go hand in hand when teaching productive skills.
For the speaking aspect, this unit has provided me with teaching ideas in the form of controlled activities, guided activities and creative communication.
For the writing aspect, I am aware of the significance of handwriting, spelling, layout and punctuation. Being a writer myself, I believe in teaching through creative writing which is also suggested. These methods plus games in the classroom make the teaching of speaking and writing much easier and more interesting for the students.
