This unit provides a great framework for how a classroom should be set up and what the role of a teacher is in terms of their relationship with their students. By carefully understanding the nuances of this lesson and how to apply the information provided in real-life classroom situations, one can become not only a good teacher but also an effective teacher. Through this lesson I realized how teaching is, in fact, a two-way street and as an effective teacher, one must be good at pulling in the experiences of their students and considering things from their perspective. Through this lesson I was able to reflect on my own past learning experiences and realize why some experiences were not as great as others. I also reflected on my own past language learning experiences and noticed the different roles my teachers and professors utilized and from that, I could see real examples relevant to myself of how to use the information I read here. Overall, I learned that being a good teacher and an effective language teacher requires you to strike a balance in the classroom between you and the students, between managing/controlling and encouraging, all the while creating an inclusive and motivating space that your students would be happy to attend everyday.
