teaching is a two-way street. Teachers must lead, but not be controlling. They must listen. Every student is different – from level to motivation to background/province to family. My experience as a mentor in newsrooms is that I can learn a lot from my team/staff as I teach. I use those lessons every time I move on. It helps that I am constantly learning another language myself — China is the 14th country I have been posted to/lived in, depending on definitions. I have had to learn many languages and scripts. It is humbling. But rewarding. I have had great teachers who got me fluent because they listened and teachers that set me back and prevented me learning because they would not listen.
