Unit 7 gives a detailed explanation of receptive skills. (Reading and writing). It is reaffirmed that both receptive and productive skills (Speaking and writing) are equally important however this unit focuses on the receptive skills. The reasons and motives for reading and writing are divided into two categories. They are; for a purpose and for entertainment. Furthermore, the unit emphasizes that readers and listeners employ a number of specialist skills while reading or writing and their understanding of the context depends on factors such as; predictive skills. specific information- scanning, general idea-skimming and deduction from the context. Teaching reading and listening, however, is not free of problems. these problems are in most cases connected with the language contained in the text, topic and task the student will perform. The unit suggests different ways of how the language problem can be approached, these include; Pre-teaching the vocabulary and carefully select the texts. also, the teacher needs to select a topic that motivates students and he or she should create interest, this will help engage the students in the task and lastly, task. The task is considered an important feature in the teaching of receptive skills and this concerns comprehension tasks. It is mentioned that a typical receptive skill follows a patchwork ESA lesson planning (ES, ES, AS, A) However its mentioned that there are different and equally effective ways of approaching the same lesson. The basic keys to a successful receptive skill lesson are: Choosing materials that motivate students, building interest before reading/listening, teaching complex vocabulary, varying the type of material using the material to practice different skills, using realistic comprehension tasks that aid understanding and incorporating activate phases that naturally lead on from the text.
