This time’s unit is about the past tenses starting with the past simple. This tense is used to talk about completed action at a definite time in the past. For the regular verb, the simple past form is by adding ed at the end of the verb. For example the verb call the past is called. In the negative form, we use did not plus the infinitive as, I didn’t call anyone yesterday. In questions we use did plus the subject plus the infinitive as in: did I call anyone yesterday? However there are some verbs that cannot take ed at the end of the verb. Those verbs are irregular. Example eat the past is ate. The second past tense is the past continuous which is used to talk about an action that was going on in the past. It is formed by using subject plus the verb be in the past form plus the present participle. I was doing my homework when my father arrived. In negation, we add not after the verb be. In questions, we bring the verb be before the subject. The third tense is the past perfect which is used to talk about an action that occurred before another action in the past. Usually, it shows the relation between the two actions. We make this tense by using the helping verb have in the past form plus the past participle. Example I had gone to bed before he arrived. The negative form is I hadn’t gone. And in questions, had you gone. The last tense in the past perfect continuous. It’s used for a longer action or situation in the past that had been going on up to the past moment we are thinking about. It’s formed by using the past of the verb have plus been plus thepresent participle. Example niandou had been watching a movie for two hours. In negetion, not is added after the auxiliary verb. In questions the auxliary verb before the subject.
