Right now I am thinking especially about the use of authentic texts in teaching ESL. It can be hard to teach authentic texts to beginning students because the students might be offended if I hand them “Clifford the Big Red Dog” or something similar that does not have any topics they would be interested to consume, though it may be the only sort of book to their level. This dilemma explains why so many French classes teach ‘Le Petit Prince’ because the book is both simply written but also contains philosophy that older students appreciate. I would like to identify some English books similar to ‘Le Petit Prince’ that may be useful to teach my students.
