The unit covers the present tenses in the English language. 1 the present simple which is usually used to talk about habits, fact, and permanent situations. It is formed by using the subject plus the base form of the verb. Example: I speak. The subject is third person singular, we usually add s. but if the verb ends is ch, sh, x, s, or o, we usually add es for the third person. Example she teaches. When the verb ends in y preceded by a consonant, the the y is changed to I then es. As in she cries. But if it is preceded by a vowel, we just add s like pay, she pays. The negative structure is formed by using don’t or doesn’t plus base form. The question form, we use do or does plus base form. Move on to the second tense which is the present continuous. This tense is used to talk about actions in progress or temporary actions, and is formed by using a subject plus be plus present participle. Example: I am teaching. In negation, we add not after the verb be as I am not teaching. In questions the verb be come before the subject like are you teaching?. The third tense is the present perfect. It is used to talk about something that happen in the past in an indefinite time or something that has a result to the present. The structure is subject plus have/has plus past participle. Example I have visited Morocco. In negation we add not after the helping verb as in I have not visited…. In questions the auxiliary verb is brought before the subject example have you visited…?. Then the last tense which is the present perfect continuous. It is used to talk about a situation that started in the pat and continues to the present or has a result to the present. Structure is subject plus have/has plus been plus present participle. Example I have been teaching since eight o’clock. The negative form, we add not after the auxiliary verb like I haven’t been teaching, and in questions, we the auxiliary verb come before the subject as in have you been teaching?. What I understand from this is that it’s important to use the correct grammatical tense when talking. When we don’t use the correct tense, misunderstanding could possibly happen.
