I always feel conflicted when I think about tests. Tests can really unsettle students and even make them want to skip class in order not to do poorly. However, tests are useful tools to measure progress and to understand at what level a student is speaking/reading/writing/listening. In a perfect world I would like to give tests for my own benefit as a teacher, but not necessarily add the graded component. I think that if a teacher has gained the respect and interest of her students then they will still try to do well on an ungraded exam.
