I appreciated watching another ESL teacher work both successfully and non-successfully in the classroom. Being able to view the instructor’s pitfalls and how they affected student engagement informed my own idea of how a lesson should run. I believe that it is possible for an instructor to not understand exactly how clear they have to be when teaching ESL. Sometimes a concept that may seem obvious and intuitive to the teacher is very confusing for students. For example, the teacher beginning the first lesson saying “today we are going to talk about what’s necessary…what are some things that are necessary?” while waving around his hands was very confusing and the lack of student response emphasized this issue. The instructor had a lot more success in the first lesson when he provided several of his own answers to the “fill in the blank” sentences because he showed a variety of things that can work with “you can ______ at the beach/at the zoo/etc.” This method helped solidify the construction of “you can’t” while still using vocabularly the students were comfortable with.
