Unit 5 examines a variety of methods used to manage a classroom including eye contact/gesture/voice, student grouping, classroom arrangement, writing on the board, individual attention, TTT vs. STT, giving instructions, rapport and discipline. Understanding what techniques pair well with specific circumstance (i.e. class size, age, school code of conduct) is key to initiating any approach. Above all else, building rapport and trust in a classroom will help students feel comfortable enough to communicate and share ideas. Certain ways to build classroom culture include classroom arrangement, learning activities, clear instructions/prompts, and positive reinforcement rather than overbearing disciplinary action. It's important to think of language as finite currency--only use it when necessary (i.e. instructions and checking for understanding), use simple language, be consistent, and incorporate visual cues.
