In this unit I have learned about teaching the receptive skills. Receptive skills are reading and listening. Reading is easier for the learners, as if they don’t understand, it is possible to read it again. However, it is still important to prepare the reading materials carefully, as they need to be suited for learner’s abilities. For weaker students it is better to use non-authentic texts.
Listening is much harder to learn than the reading as the meaning needs to be immediately grasped by the listener. Therefore, besides selecting the audio carefully, teachers should pre-teach the vocabulary.
While teaching both of these skills, teachers need to make sure, that the teaching materials are interesting and relevant to the students, as interest and curiosity promotes language learning.
