This unit serves as a final unit in English grammar. Modals are used to express obligation, possibility, permission, ability, and advice. They are also used to express different degrees of formality. The unit goes over different types of auxilary verbs and their uses. One example is "may", which is used for polite request, formal permission, and less than 50% certainty. The two voices used in English are active and passive. Active voice puts the focus on a subject. Passive voice, however, is used when it is unclear or not important who performs the action. Phrasal verbs consist of a verb plus one one or two particles. Three types of phrasal verbs are intrasitive, transitive separable, and transitive inseparable.
