In this unit I have looked into methods of teaching. Some of them, like grammar translation, seems to be very old fashioned and from my own experience I can say that they do not work very well. However, learning gramma is important part of the learning process and in my opinion none of theory’s work well when used alone. We also looked into the lesson planning. The typical lesson follows the ESA plan. It is important to have the engage part, as students warm up and use the language without the fear of making mistakes and being embarrassed. In addition, it sets the tone for the lesson and motivates students to actively participate. The following parts – study and activate - can be repeated as many times as teacher seems necessary, transforming the ‘straight arrow’ into ‘patchwork’ lesson. This transition is more likely to happen with more advanced classes or when teaching older students. Finally, I have learned about the mistakes and errors. From my own experiences in language classes, I know that the worst thing teacher can do is to be over critical and immediately correct every single mistake student does. It really creates a lot of confident issues and also pushes students to talk incredibly slowly and only use already known sentences just to avoid the interruptions from the teacher. It of course does not mean that language does not need to be corrected, quite the opposite, however it should not discourage the students of language use.
