This Unit covered three grammar topics: modals, phrasal verbs, and the passive voice. First we covered modals or helper verbs such as can, could, shall, will , need to, and ought. These verbs convey different messages that can change the meaning of the original verb. It can convey obligation, uncertainty, ability, advice, permission, or prohibition. Phrasal verbs are verbs that consist of a phrase to convey the meaning of one word, for example turn up means arrive. There are three different forms that vary based on the direct object and their ability to be rearranged. Finally passive voice is used to stress the object rather than the subject of the verb. This form is often used when the performer is unknown.
