Unit 18 focuses on modals, phrasal verbs and passive voice. Modals are characterized by different ideas such as obligation, possibility, permission, ability, and advice. For example, the word 'may' is used when there's less than 50% certainty whereas 'must' is used when there's 95% certainty. The passive voice is characterized by when an "object of an active verb becomes the subject of the passive verb.'" For example, the present simple becomes passive formation by including 'is/are + past participle' in the sentence. One key takeaway from the unit is the difference between phrasal verbs, specifically intransitive (type 1) versus transitive separable (type 2 +3). One way for students to learn phrasal verbs is by learning key vocabulary items.
