Learning the rules under which the tenses are used and looking at the sentence construction rather than the sentence subject has enabled me to be more confident in identifying which tenses are required for each set of circumstances. The more I work through the units the more familiar the patterns of word usage become. Like any language usage the more I reflect about how I am using these tenses as I use them the more understanding I get.
